jeesus man i thought i could be a smart arese wind up but i dont usually reach these sorts of levels unless ive been drinking whisky

For further information M8 12.9 "alens" can be fitted and with nearly 50% more clamping force its a modification we did on the race cars when even a welded and bolted arms showed signs of cracking the welds

the housing is forged steel and so can take 30ftlb easily - in a destructive test it was the 6mm hex driver that let go rather than the thread or the bolt.

Sean - if you check your Zeus reference book you'll find that an M8 x 1.25 bolt hole needs a 6.8mm tapping drill - so an M7 bolt hole is already oversized. If you used an M8 fine (M8 x 1.0) then you could drill out to 7mm and get full threads formed when you tap - but you'd then be dealing with another orphan bolt size with limited choices.

so thats 0.1mm off the root - I can live with that and the broken snap on 6mm allen socket confims the Impiric eingineering that went in to that particular mod :P

;)

I smoothed and polished the new arms before priming them with epoxy primer and then spraying them in silver 2 pack. They look very good against the housings which I had nickel plated and fitted a grease nipple so I can run them without a gaiter

Nice post BJ, pics please!

32mm long, instead of 37.5 for the longer bolt of the pair?

That reduces the depth of thread it's engaged from 10mm to only 4.5mm.

As you say, the bolts which Citroen used may not be stronger, but one of them is longer...

Here's the nickel plated ball joint housing (with s/s grease nipple). Track rod is nickle plated too. The arm in place is the old one that is now oval. I will ditch the steel bearing cups and replace them with the phospor bronze ones pictured below.

There's also a photo of the smoothed and silver painted steering arm - but I will probably repaint it in Fiat Grigio Jet to match the rest of the chassis when it is resprayed next week.

Re bolt depth - not a problem. I will run the steering arm through the milling machine and remove 4mm off the thick boss on the rear bolt hole to restore the thread engagement - much easier and quicker than finding longer M7 Grade 10.9 bolts in chrome or stainless.
