oboe,
there's no way that it's the clutch plate 'burning' as it's still stuck hard between the flywheel and the pressure plate.
Also, a seized spigot bearing is such a long shot it's over the horizon.

That burning smell will either be your starter motor overheating since it's stalled and pulling maximum amps, or your wiring heading for meltdown. :(
Best not to keep the starter motor engaged without it turning for more than a few seconds...

When you drove the car around in first gear, did you keep the clutch pedal pressed to the floor all the time?
If not, tighten the clutch cable so there's absolutely no free play at the pedal and give the 'kangarooing' trick another go.

If that doesn't work, time to get the spanners out and pull the engine.

ken.

so been trying all day , got it into 1st and drove round the block with no luck , then got stuck in reverse for a bit , its now in 2nd gear tried moving on drive way with handbrake on to free it , just starts burning the clutch big time

shall i just keep going for it ? or is it time take the engine out and sort it that way ??

I suspect the same as Ken, I think... Oboe's comments don't quite add up.

To free the clutch, Oboe, the clutch pedal needs to be fully depressed at all times. Otherwise, there is no pressure on it to release - for the plates to separate.

Do you have a longish, SAFE section of road to use the car on, Oboe? If so, as Ken suggests, try and get it running in first gear (although a higher gear is even better, tho' you'll need more road!)

To do this, get the engine nice and warm so that it's running on tick-over, not fast idle. Then jump in, get someone to give you a push until you are gently under way at a walking pace, and try and 'crash' into 1st gear with the clutch pedal pressed fully down at all times. Once under way, get the car kangaroo-hopping by jabbing the throttle and lifting off repeatedly. CLUTCH DOWN ALL THE TIME! If you have road space, get into 2nd or third gear and repeat - the separating force on the clutch will be greater.

Don't forget that when you need to come to a halt the clutch is still 'engaged' so you'll need to knock her into neutral whilst you are still moving and then brake.

An alternative - and much safer! - method is to get the front off the ground (obviously with rear wheels WELL choked) and fire her up in first gear. Once under way, speed up through the gears until in third and then first try simply flooring and releasing the throttle repeatedly a good number of times (CLUTCH TO THE FLOOR - ALWAYS!!!). If this doesn't work, then try maintaining a steady speed in 3rd gear (quite scary - them wheels are spinnin'...) and jab the foot brake quite briskly and repeatedly - not enough to stall the car or even slow the engine down too much, but more a percussive 'jab'.

Keep on at this. Do it for a good 5 minutes. Then stop, have a cuppa, and go back and do it again.

Yet another method is to tow your car with it in 4th gear. Take it for a good run with the clutch pressed down at all times. The motion will be spinning your engine and hopefully the towing car will cope with this ok - the li'l twin-pot shouldn't strain it too much if it's in top gear. This will apply a steady, gentle kind of releasing force and might work if it isn't TOO stuck.

(I had a Ford Escort based kit car that seized its clutch over a few months during a rebuild - damn, it was well stuck. I even tried towing it for miles with the clutch floored - nothing. I then jacked up the rear axle and got it running in 3rd at a fair 'virtual' speed - around 25mph - and kept jabbing on the handbrake. It took a few minutes - you begin to believe it ain't going to work - but then 'CLANG!!!. The most beautiful sound I have ever heard in my life :D

As Ken says, there shouldn't be any burning smell going on - something's not right there :?

If you haven't got a way of getting it on the road I've freed a clutch off by supporting the car on something, getting it upto a decent speed in top gear, then depressing the pedal whilst a mate pushed the car off the stands, when the wheels hit the ground it freed it off straight away, but if I were you I'd just take the engine out and stick a new clutch in it.

anyway it might be just the descriptions ( or the 2 large post work/start the weekend pernods-thanks Mr Fieldmouse!) but.....

if its driving about and changing gears and burning the clutch are we not looking at a f'ked box rather than a stuck clutch?
