It is possible to make your own leak-down tester and I'm sure once you've realised what an effective tool it is in pinpointing exactly where a problem lies, you would only use a compression tester as a 'first check' instrument. ken I do actually have one Ken, rarely use it these days as not much call. In fact I am not sure I could even put my hands on it or the compression tester which will be in a box somewhere from when I moved from the UK. P

Re: Periodic dramatic loss in power
Well I should have guessed, its bringing back memories of my cx. It's been spluttering like hell today mainly at low revs, stopping completely in traffic twice, I've had to use the choke to keep the revs up. Went to shove some carb cleaner down the inlet and noticed the state of the bloody fuel line! Cracked to chuffery. The higher pressure fuel line on the cx pee'd fuel out at quite a rate. If you search YouTube for me you'll probably see a video. I think this may be. Combination of poor fuel line, no fuel filter and me being skint lately so running the tank lower than normal.
I've ordered some fuel line and a filter from Roy, so I'll bung those on either at or after the weekend. If she's still not playing fair I'll take her up to Terry to try some wizardry with the idle jet.

Re: Periodic dramatic loss in power
personally id put the fuel filter on the bit between the chassis leg and the pump, then no crap is going to go through the pump, which should lengthen the life?? whearas if you get a big lump of crap it could ruin the pump!

Re: Periodic dramatic loss in power
replacing fuel line from chassis leg upwards (and maybe the flex on the tank depending on how generous Mr Morris is) so may well do.

Whilst I agree that the chassis leg is definitely the best place for the pump, you're very unlikely to get any big lumps of crap ruining the pump regardless of whether there's a filter and also irrespective of where it's located. Even without it, the fuel pick-up has a fine gauze filter on the end and the pump itself has one internally. Beyond the pump, the fuel inlet to the carb usually has a gauze filter as well. I'm not arguing against fitting a filter as I still think they're an excellent idea for catching the really tiny debris which can block carb jets, just pointing out that for coarse debris our cars already have plenty of protection.

Re: Periodic dramatic loss in power
I've never seen a 2cv fuel pump with a filter built in?

Re: Periodic dramatic loss in power
The few fuel pumps I've seen, all non 2cv all have had filters in, they tend crus up over time and a good clean wouldn't go a miss
