Post Re: my shock absorber just fell of...
The point of asking a technical question on a forum is either to hear the sound of one's own voice (you'll post the same question on more than one forum if this is you) or to get lots of different replies to the problem, some right, some wrong (I think that's the real point!), if one wants just a correct answer with no back & forth chat then a p.m. to a technical guru will get a quick accurate answer with no chance of non technical and subjective input - but then the forum might be a bit less amusing!

On the subject of negative comments about suppliers or products - such discussion is banned on 2CVGB forum, self moderation is surely one of the attractions of this place?

I don't know if the Moderator wants this thread to drift into the subject of just how good or bad the 2CVCity chassis is but I presume that provided people mention facts as opposed to hearsay or rumour, there's no harm in it.

When I rechassised my 2CV I took advice from all sorts of people then went to actually see the chassis before making my own mind up. From inspecting the chassis it looked well made and easily strong enough compared to the dreadfully rusted mess of the original chassis, like 1000% better. The car went on the road in March this year and so far she's done nearly 3000 miles. The lost shock absorber bolt has been the only slight problem so far and that was easily rectified by fitting a replacement and doing it up more tightly than before. Other than that the new chassis does everything it's supposed to do and so far I'm happy with it.

Well said. I would take a broken shock absorber bolt over a collapsing chassis any day. :D

There is no doubt that the original Citroen method of a double ended stud is far superior to a simple bolt. In an ideal situation a simple bolt should be supported at both ends to negate any chance of shear forces shearing the thing. The 2CVCity chassis was built this way to presumably save money and it works - to a degree. Read the excellent tomes 'Engineer to Win' and 'Prepare to Win' by the race car designer Carroll Smith will open your eyes as to the engineering solution to certain stresses and strains when designing racing cars. He often berates other race car designers for failing to properly support suspension bolts.

Back to the 2CVCity chassis, for me it works, so far, but I shall keep an eye on things and if the same fault reoccurrs, I will make modifications. As a whole, the chassis (for me) is excellent.

Different car, but a similar problem, which MG considered serious enough to issue a recall on those vehicles which were affected...

Note that owners were advised that any damper bolts which had worked loose needed to be replaced as their shear strength may already have been compromised.

OK, but...

Given that the original design requires solely a threaded boss welding to the chassis - and that the City design requires... a threaded boss welding to the chassis... Exactly how much money is saved?

Hi Adrian,
it's not just a threaded boss on an original chassis, as there's also some 'devil in the detail' involved, none of which is anything to do with M & S... ;)

ken.
( p.s. hard to believe that it's exactly a week since the first 'session' at Registers' w/e.
Wonder where the intervening 7 days went? )

I fail to see the point of buying someting that is sort of OK when the price difference between the best and the worst is less than £200. The hassle factor is worth more than that.
