James it doesn't matter if you drill a bit of the thread away, it's so little compared to the amount of thread overall. It's only important that the thread that is there isn't distorted. See this picture of mine, the drilled thread is at the top, I also ground away a patch of thread that had been messed up by the old staking.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3550&hilit=wheel+bearing&start=20

you need to break the bridge thats left where the cut out was dont worry about breaking in to the thread but its really the inner face you want to be removing so the ring collapses in to the middle - i say collapse what your trying to do is releive the tension

my photos arent to clear as it was a mobile and flash so its reflected off the swarf, you can see the chisel marks where ive gone round the ring punching it in to the middle to break the corrosion grip

meh not really my current one needs a 10+ ton press its a given you just replace the whole stub assembly when the bearing gets rumbly fronts on modern Cits usually leave the inner race on the stub and you need to grind it off or use a cutting torch, Dollys are a piece of piss.

This one isnt sean.

Nut out. What a performance

Now can't get the bearing out

It moves a bit with the hub, but seems to be fixed solid to the hub. Neither my haynes nor autobook shed a bit of light. Or do i give in and get a bearing puller...?

Advice appreciated :)

James,
you should have driven the hub out before attacking the retaining ring...
There's a special drift for doing that job, but Sean's method of using a pair of tyre levers should work.
If it doesn't, search through the toolbox until you find a socket which fits inside the hub, where the driveshaft would have been, but be careful not to bruise the splines or you'll have problems feeding the driveshaft back into the hub.

Whoops

Which way am i attacking it with said socket..?? From 'outer' side or 'inner' side?

I wish this was better documented in the haynes manual!!

Thanks for all your help so far BTW!!

ah!
ive always got the hub out by putting a couple of levers in and a few sharp tugs it starts to move - rear drums come out similarly by getting the hooked ends of my £ shop levers in the cut out groove for the dust cap and off it pops.

Got the hub off and bearing out (with help of a crowbar and a hammer)

Inner race of couse stuck to hub but my now ex's father brought a puller (whilst she loaded her car up with some of her shit) and we got the inner race off

Now to re assemble later if the mood fancy's..!

Greased the bearing up ready to go in

Should have it back together in 45 i recon..?

Photos will follow
