Draw a cross-section picture of a 2CV and imagine where the centre of gravity is. Make a mark - it will not be far off the floor, say about seat level.
Get a piece of string with a weight one one end and stick the other on the centre of gravity. Tilt drawing until the vertical piece of string is outside of the wheels.

Repeat with fully laden cars - this time because of the people standing up, not sitting down low you will not need to tilt the drawing of the car as much before the string comes outside the wheels.

All to do with centre of gravity and where the centrifugal (centripetal pedants!) force acts.

...plus, in this particular instance, the payload/ballast at high level was inadeqately secured and the input of kinetic energy into the bodyshell as that shifted to the port side was what precipitated the snap transition between stability and instability of the rig.

Russell was taking on not just gravity, but also inertia (and maybe some other stuff I cannot think of this morning).

If you really want/need to be technical then the following link might answer your need :-
http://web.mit.edu/emech/dontindex-buil ... chbk_2.pdf

Failing that don't drive your 2cv at speed in reverse and swerve providing your gearbox doesn't unwind before your have time to swerve

Nope,
theory about statics won't be of any help when it's dynamics you're considering...

At the end of the day if your dumb enough to put a heavy load way above your c of g then it's going to fall over

I think the point I'm asking about has been missed. Why can you load a standard 2cv up with drunk lunatics hanging out the roof and drive like a twerp throwing it around and they just lean over a bit, yet my car which is 6" lower and vastly stiffer had two normal size people in and it was evidently so unstable it was capable of falling over. It's not like I had an excessive load on board or the car was being driven at outlandish speeds, the racing cars following me certainly could have cornered faster than I did. I find it pretty hard to believe the weight of a couple of people would be enough to make it dangerous, especially when a stock 2cv doesn't suffer falling over issues in the same circumstances.

I've also done stuff like strapping a chassis on the roof of standard car and driven it at speed and it certainly didn't behave unpredictably.

I'm basically asking so I can modify the car accordingly to avoid it happening in the future

Easy job. Return it to original spec. :D
