Hi, could we compile a list of all the differences between an 85 and an 89 special?
Footman james can't insure me because it isn't 85 or before, so I'd like a list to present them with to show how insignificant the differences are?

Cheers.

To be honest I wouldn't bother. The Charleston's 1985 (I think!) so Footman James were able to send me a renewal quote. The trouble was, it had jumped from £310 to over £700!

I can't help thinking their PR department must quite like being able to say they've sorted the u25 issue out, but you can't be remotely serious about keeping sonebody's business if you more than double their premium in one go.

We're with Adrian Flux now for a reasonably good price. It's not a classic policy but it's only for a year as we both turn 25 in a couple of months, and it's quite good timing from a point of view of hanging on to NCB for a couple more years.

FJ lost my business.

They doubled all my insurance quotes and nothing had changed. They also have this bizarre cut of date system where they have agreed at what age a car becomes classic. Its stranger than you think.

A Citroen (any as far as I can understand) has to be over 20 years old, whereas a Jag only has to be over 6 years.

Mini's (proper ones) which were made until 2000 are regarded as classic.

If you have a Japanese car, good luck as they have to be over 30 before they are regarded as classic and any 1980's Vauxhall, regardless of how rare it is do not even qualify.

Its all a con really and this just shows how much of a con it really is. Now you can tell FJ to shove it up their arse, (that was my comment to their sales team) and I took my business to Peter James who was more than happy to give me a sensible quote for all my cars and bikes etc.

FJ don't care about you none of them do, they just want your money so play hard ball and tell them to stick it if you are not happy.

I swapped from Footman James to Peter James a couple of years ago. FJ wouldn't cover me for more than 90 days abroad (when I was working in Brittany for the summer), but Peter James would. The underwriter was the same, and all the policy terms and conditions (apart from the one I needed) were identical. So FJ clearly just couldn't be bothered to sort it out for me,

For classic car insurance Peter James say the vehicles have to be over 30 years old. Our '87 D0lly does not qualify.

That's odd, because Peter James insured my Fourtrak (1991) on a classic policy.

It's probably not that odd. Peter James' website says "30yr+" for an online quote, and also says "If not, call us".

England is mine, it owes me a living. Although thats probably more your generation than mine.

I'm gonna stay with Elephant as of last night. Wheel fallen off car trailer, customer services closed, phoned sales changed insurance for me on the spot.

Blimey, do they still try to pull that one? We were having similar issues twenty years ago when we lived and worked in Brittany. There is no reason under EU insurance law to limit cover abroad to 90 days and then charge more for anything beyond that, other than blatant profiteering and charging for something under a false pretext just because they can.
