If the clutch is burning it must be slipping. Maybe the splines are clagged up causing the gears to crunch. I think you ought to bite the bullet and take it out.

Go for it, if its that bad it will need changing. Bet Pongo has got time on his hands.

How long does it take to do a clutch? hour and a half? With all those Facom tools you love it'll be a piece of piddle man.

Oboe,

Out of interest, is this the car you brought from Mr Cotterall in Derbyshire ?

Maybe with wooden floors ?....if so I have some pics of its re-build.

However :

1) I might be totally wrong

2) It wont help you at the moment

3) ;) Good luck !

Are you sure its the clutch smelling and not the brakes?
Sounds like the spigot shaft is seized in the flywheel bearing - might not come apart as easy as you think.
Alternatively you might be not have been rough enough with it yet! - More "Rodeo Style Kangaroo-ing" required.

if that was the case then surely the clutch pedal wouldn't depress, would it ?

Will someone tell him :D

Thought I'd better qualify that. Seized spigot bearing will not stop pedal depressing, but will cause gear crunching cos engine will still be turning input shaft.
