Post Re: 125 or 135R15
well ive got all the serv history and theres nothing, the only thing replaced before it was in my hands was the bumpers and the obvious service items every year.. the sidewalls arent 100 % but the car had been garaged since new

anyway that aside i have been thinking about investing in new tyres and wheels as the wheels arent brilliant,

This tyre didn't show any real signs of age untill it developed the massive hole in the side wall is not worth risking it there has been a few articals in magazines like pratical classics over the last year or so about old tyres.

How about this?

It should encourage folk to check their tyre sidewalls properly, not just have a look at the tread depth...

Hey Ken, what do you think of rebuilt (or is it remade - I don´t know the exact term in English...) tyres?
Are they worth? Are they safe?
Thanks for your opinion.

The only remould tyres for 2cvs that I've seen have been HORRIBLE.

And I'm with the others on James's tyres. They're an accident waiting to happen. We had a 2cv that'd been in a barn for ~15yrs. Pumped the tyres up, sat it in the drive - and one morning a sidewall had gained a hernia. There was a tennis ball of inner tube sticking out.

Loads of myths about remoulds [and loads of things that are true as well]

I worked for a tyre manufacturer for 5 years so know the ins and outs.

Did you know that aircraft tyres are remoulded and often as many as 15 times on the same casing.

That's as likely to be kerbing damage as anything else...

There's a sort of oval marking on one sidewall, just after the letters DOT usually, with a three or four digit number in. First two digits are week number, rest is year.

Three digits - 80s
Three digits plus triangle - 90s
Four digits - 2000+

If it's anything but four digits, it's junk imho.

my michelins are the original from new 22 years ago, still going strong, tons of tread left and in good shape, cards now done 43000 and i wont be replacing the tyres soon ;)

It's been a slow day at work and has meant I've had time to dwell on things and this has got me thinking about the innocence and naivity of youth....... Or, perhaps the sheer misguided complacency of someone seemingly unwilling to listen to generations of experience and knowlege!

Sorry if I'm speaking out of turn here but, tyres are the one (well four really on most cars) thing that you really can't afford to overlook on a car.

There's no point in trying to save a few quid/euros here and there when it comes to tyres.

You can have the best suspension, the best steering and the best brakes in the world but that doesn't mean shit if your tyres are crap or knackered!

The only thing that really connects the steering, suspension and brakes to the road is the tyres!!

If your tyres are old and past their best, is it really worth risking your (or anybody elses life) for the sake of saving some money? If your brakes were down to the metal or the pads were so old they'd gone rock hard and you couldn't afford to change them, you'd park the car up and leave it until you could afford to sort them out I'd imagine?

Why do people still insist on driving on shit tyres?

Same goes for really cheap tyres, they're a false economy and always a compromise. Sure, they have to meet current legislation regarding safety aspects but doesn't mean they'll actually grip the road in drizzle let alone a downpour! Then of course, you'll find yourself having to replace them more often-I used to find I'd get through 2 pairs of Firestones on the rear to one pair of Michelins on the front!

James, I'm not (just) having a dig at you but your insistence that your tyres are the originals bothers me, get them checked for your own safety if nothing else!

Rant over-happy Monday everyone ;)
