Just to second the point about hammerited sills. I did hammerite my sills but they're hidden by the running boards so it doesnt matter that they look dreadful :)

Yup ...contains "Isocyanate" .

You're supposed to wear breathing apparatus when spraying it....[and presumably, that does'nt mean a 50pence "facemask" from your local branch of B&Q]
I dunno if the same applies to brush painting it on .....but I would'nt chance it.

You don't need full breathing equipment with modern 2 pack paint. Paint factors will sell masks suitable for 2 pack with carbon filters. The mask has a limited life span and should be used in a reasonably well ventilated environment.

Really no type of paint should be sprayed without an appropriate mask. It gets into your lungs and sets and will stay there for life. The masks are pretty cheap, 15 quid or so, which is less than even a backstreet lung transplant.

So that's 15 quid for you, 15 quid for the wife, the next door neighbours too (either side) and the postman if he's due. Do they do them in animal sizes too I wonder for next door's tabby? ;)

2 pack is seriously shite stuff to use unless you have an isolated garage away from prying noses. Those nice chaps from the environmental health dept also come round with a geiger counter type thing if you are suspected of having used it without meeting their safety criteria. Big fines await.

Did you buy a mask for all the neighbours when you painted cellulose?

There are several ways you can damage yourself when painting. 2 pack is nowhere near as dangerous as it was several decades ago as the isocyanates have to a great extent been taken out. Also it isn't just old fashined 2 packs that contain them, even some water based paints have them in. If you get it on your skin it can cause dermatitis and breathing it in causes occupational asthma.

That is not to say that great care shouldn't be taken with 2 pack, but there is a myth that somehow cellulose paint is rather benign. It isn't. Cellulose paint contains organic solvents. These remove natural oils from your skin and also cause dermatitis. Breathing organic solvents affects your liver, kidneys, central nervous system and respiratory system.

Regardless of which paint you spray getting paint dust in your lungs is less than desirable and use a mask. In truth the best advice is probably to get someone else to paint it. I wasn't trying to convice people 2 pack is safe; rather use precautions whatever you spray.

Personally, although I can spray and I can do it well, I tend to send paint jobs out.
