Post Re: Chassis in the UK
I know of at least three 2cv city chassis which have broken, at the front kick up. Two of those more than once. Also, I made this video of one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjKI9R4cjtc

before you all start saying 'the engine only moves that much because it's rubber mounted' then watch the bumper overrider and headlamp bar.

I tried the same thing with one of Kens SLC chassis and it didn't appear to have any detectable movement. I don't think a Genuine one would too because of it's construction, but I've never tried so can't really tell.

I've noticed that my chassis on the Bamboo does this, it's also a cheapo one but not a 2CV city one, I was told it's a GW fabs one, but not made with box sections as Richard Morris' is, mine is folded sheet.

My own personal preference is a genuine Citroen one, preferably a 60's-70's one which don't appear to rot as fast.

By the end of this year, we will have our Barbour 2x4 chassis available.

It is an adaptation of our superbly strong 4x4 chassis but for everyday cars. So if your planning a raid, fancy off road or just want peace of mind then this should be for you.

This is interesting.

I always wonder what a stiff chassis is doing to the suspension, steering and handling?

Blimey, Rich, that'll be impressive! Four driven wheels on a motorcycle?
Or will it be made out of a bit of wood?

Interesting indeed, anyone know who's chassis those are, Mehari Cassis? It seems to suggest the galvanised version of an O.E. type chassis is stronger, anyone want to hypothesize why, could it be the galvanising is acting like a glue/brazing in the spot welded seems? or maybe just the coating adding a tiny bit to the overall thickness of the metal?

Joolz,
as regards whose chassis, the 'cataphorese' and 'galvanise' are most probably Cassis products, with the 'origine' being an original Citroen item.
Curious that they didn't subject the galvanized version to the same maximum load as the painted version, which failed at 1250.
Or maybe they did, but chose not to show that test... ;)

Any increase in strength will be the result of the 'brazing' effect of hot dip galvanizing, which supplements the spot welds, in exactly the same manner as Renault hot dipped the shells of their Espaces to provide both corrosion resistance and enhanced stiffness.
(85 microns of zinc added to each surface of a 1mm steel sheet won't have a significant effect on its physical properties.)

Btw, the test depicted is not a true torsion test, as the positioning of the restraints on the chassis mean that both bending and torsion of the chassis can occur...

ken.

Actually no point in a chassis unless it is stiff, stiff as possible without being fragile, SLC is under our 2cv racer, unbeatable in handling in its day (can't be bothered with new engine regs).

On my race car we have a genuine Citroen 2cv Chassis with some additional stiffening in places, with the springs we have on the car, the only thing that seems to stress is ME :o
