I did run an M28 in the Ami with M4 heads, manifolds, carb and exhaust for the visual correctness, it certainly wasn't up to straight M28 performance. Mind you the carb wasn't in its first flush of yoof. It was all just a straight bolt on swap and it did work - nothing 'argued' mechanicaly - but its only virtue was visual.

I did the same in my AK350 a few years ago. I got the impression that the power and torque was roughly half way between an M4 and an M28. As I often use the van fully laden, it was definitely an improvement on motorway hills: In places where it would previously lose speed dramatically to the point that you needed second gear to keep going, with the M28/M4 hybrid it would be a slower drop in speed and third gear would be ok.
