Any free play at the pedal?
There should be 20 to 25mm before any resistance is felt, beyond that of the spring on the clutch pedal itself.
If there is some free play, the clutch is jiggered...

Finally got round to adjusting the clutch.

Now it won't go up hills.

Have I over adjusted it?

Thread Hijack!....Ken, mine makes a lot of noise when in gear - it's definitely not the thrust bearing as stops once clutch is pressed....is this a sign of imminent main input bearing failure or gearbox rebuild due? Is it possible for a bear of very little brain and no special tools to replace the bearing?

Hi Nels,
is it noisier in 4th gear (when on the move) than in 3rd?
If so, that would certainly suggest that the input shaft bearing is beginning to let go... :(

It's a 6205NR bearing, easy enough to get hold of but not so easy to fit and in my opinion if you're going that far into a gearbox, you may as well go the whole hog.
Are the 2nd and 3rd synchromesh mechanisms still working well?

Ken

It certainly whines more in 4th and 2/3rd synchro does crunch occasionally unless you gauge revs right.......basket case huh?

I'd prefer to think of it as a 'stitch in time saves nine' gearbox.
It's when folk carrying on driving one to the bitter end, after it's begun to show signs of distress, that it can become a basket case... :(
