lpgo,
since I was making my own (fairly simple) electronic ignition units for A series back in the late 1980s, I think that I'd already left the cave by that point.
For the record, they used Talbot ignition modules, which I triggered using either the original Hall effect sensor or an infra-red emitter/detector pair out of Omron cash tills.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TALBOT-ALPINE ... 27eb486900

One great feature of those Talbot units was that the circuitry incorporated a timer, which switched off the supply to the coil after a few seconds if it detected that the engine wasn't rotating.
Not that much new under the sun, really...

However, my dismissal of the suggestion that an electric fan could ever be a viable alternative to one mounted on the crankshaft is based on different reasons other than the use of an electronic switch; you're going to have to bolt one hell of a powerful DC motor onto the front end of the fan housing to reliably do the same job as the original setup.

Also, wouldn't you need a load/speed sensing setup in order to match the fan's output to how hard the engine was working?
That seems to be taken care of 'automatically' by bolting it to the crankshaft

That's why 1-2-Spark uses a 1024 bit pressure sensor monitioring the airpressure in the inletmanifold.. and inletpressure eqauls load....

Therefor we have Pulse-width modulation these days....... but I'm sure a on and off situation with a threshold as said before will do the trick also....

and where do you go with your fan bolted on your crank trying to even cool a cold (just started) engine down in wintertime, that is probably more destructive for your engine (over a period of winters) but we all accept it because it has always been like that....

Electric Fan.
Pacet Fan 14" http://www.europaspares.com/mechanical/ ... -only.html

Clutch Driven Fan.
The Magnet Clutch part sits on the crank needs to be very precisely aligned and balanced NOT easy.
The Coil assembly has to align with the above however it sits independently of the crankcase, Alignment not easy.
By alignment I mean to 10 Thou.

No
there are variations of the standard: if you look at the fan its 3 groups of 3 blades middle blade from the 3 removed or the latest is to have a semi circular cut out at the root of each blade which produces a flexible tip which may or may not cause the fan to reduce drag at higher revs ( when the airspeed of the car helps the cooling)

Racers have the luxury of wide open throttle most of the time and a light payload no having to lug 3 passengers up a hill at 40mph in stop start traffic. also when the engine throws a leg out of bed one shrugs and gets on with the replacement - not so much fun 100miles in to the family holiday or on the Monday morning commute to work.

Full 9 bladed fan for a reliable standard car.

Citroen uses 460 watt fans in C5 and C8, so look promising already...
