Re: Coil
Well I love working on A models, so no worries replacing points etc etc. Yellow coil hmm not sure. Don't mind replacing black coils when needed. After swapping the wires it still start easy??

C'mon Pony, I remember Paul's pickup hicupping more than a little when the coil was about 500mm above the water/mud level.
Dalby Forest, the year that Rick test drove the difflock/2WD/tractor tyre mix, in case you've forgotten...

Re: Coil
Back in that time you hadn't 1-2-Spark, now you do and it is waterproof as long as your blackbox is above waterlevel, (You can put it on a stick high above your car ). I'm working on a epoxy filled blackbox then it will be 100% waterproof....

Re: Coil
lpgo, to be fair, the Accel coil may be its own worst enemy, as the HT voltage it can produce is high enough to arc over from the turrets to the metal straps used to atttach the coil to the light bar. That problem is reduced if the metal straps are replaced with plastic tie wraps.

Re: Coil
I think the (yellow) coil isn't the problem Ken....
123 is a great product; but put a 123 for a few minits under water.......... mostly less, then you have your problem....
p.s. here at the Dutch forum goes the rumor that you need to attach the 2 ends from the yellow coil to (a piece of metal) the lightbar with some iron pieces so that a iron-ring is made which amplefies the force of the coil...... makes sense to me.....
but I don't have a yellow coil so I can't test it...
p.s.2 I'm still driving my black coil be it with Megasquirt, or my own ignition, even in my turbo car with over 1.5 bar of boost it never missed a single beat.... The coil isn't the problem the ignition system is (braking the coil down)!!!!!!!
ps.3 take a look at this video, this is my ignition making Sparks more then half an inch long with a black coil, what more do you need???? and the coil stays cool because 'the ignition just gives the amount of current the coil needs... points doing it up to 100 times longer (cranking)

Re: Coil
those coils with a protruding iron bar are /were designed to bolt to a metal bike frame as a heat sink Im not too sure about coil design but most coils have the the iron core as a circuit or loop (welders microwaves etc etc) so there may be something in that Geo
as for the Accel coil and water - the mearest whiff of drizzle during a race will have the coil leaking out through the boots if it hasnt burn through the red 90* end already
Geo the pressure inside the engine will have an effect on the spark length higher pressure more resistance.
Viking pick up a cheaper harley black coil like this one here ! you will be amazed at the differance it makes to mid to top end. You can pick up standard coils for a few Euro as the big scary biker (bank clark) upgrades his Hog with more bling and puts the more than adequate standard stuff on e-bay.

Re: Coil
Thanks Sean but no thanks. I'm driving vans and have no need for speed or a smother ride. Cruising at max 80 is very enjoyable and all my standard black shit coil as some people call them, are doing fine. My wife's red flash can run 115 flat out for hours (to Paris and back) but I don't enjoy any of that.

Re: Coil
Viking you are quite right....... You like points and in your point of view "simplisity" and easy to repair I have nothing against it... The only thing I am saying is take a good look at your capasitor, or change it for a better one..... The problem nowadays is that even if you buy new "original" stuff it is all crap, new capacitors are crap and new black coils also....... so you need to filter out the best items befor you buy......
Sorry now again a few words about my ignition..... You can leave the original points in place with my ignition, so in case the electronic ignition faills you can go back to points in only a few seconds or if you are doing it fancy by the click of a switch.... (you only need to change 1 wire to the coil and thats it)
So you have best of both worlds.... Electronic ignition pro - Better performance -better fuellefficiency -better for the environment -better for your coil -waterproof points -simplicity, easy to repair.... (in your eyes)....
So this is all I want to say, because even if I would give you my ignition for free you still wouldn't want it.........
