cheapo points assist kits like Vellaman/Maplins do away with the condensor as does the more expensive BoyerBrandsen

Best to do both though! I always did both together.

Best to do both though! There's logic in that, I suppose! Velleman kit is my preference, but presumably a more modern capacitor would do the job cheaply and more reliably?

Thanks Louise, no worries about that spanner, as I've already made a better one. More important, hope the car's running better after that bit of 'fettling in a field' and all set to go en vacances... ken Louise wrote: ken wrote: ken ( p.s. Rumble602 wrote: Well I've changed the condenser, and things appear to be running a lot better. An Ecas super coil is on order, to replace the collection of duff coils Nikki has been acquiring. Sounds like the problem has been fixed, but I'll bring along a new coil I have as a spare, plus points and condenser and a length of fuel hose, should there be a shortage of either in anyone's spares kit! How good is Nellie's battery? I've a new one spare if needed. Probably not the problem, but have the valve clearances been checked recently? I had a situation once where the gap(s) on one side had closed up, causing a loss of power, etc. I had it down as a condenser failure too...

Anyone ever fitted one of these Velleman kits. I've looked at them before but the biggest problems to my mind are where to put it and what to do about the heatsink if it goes in a box?

And I couldn't get it to work... I think I must have wired it up wrong, so it's a job for another day And Aidan, you are doing the tappets to right?
