i got 3 points on my licence for the same towing

Personally, I'd hire a trailer. You know exactly where you stand legally and I'd just feel happier with a properly braked trailer than with some shonky lashed up A frame and no trailer brakes.

its also worth remebering that if (in the UK) you passed your driving test on or after the 1st January you can not tow a trailer with a total gross weight of over 750KG, or a braked trailer.
Any trailer that has a gross weight of over 750KG will and legally should be braked..


Its a huge huge grey area. But ive done endless reading about it.

Its a bit annoying, as it means you cant even tow an empty braked trailer that weighed say 200kg!

I've taken the test, costs about £300 quid, and gives you catagory B+E on your liscense.

I geuss when going to hire a trailer they would check to see if you had this catagory, because if not your driving affectivly with no liscense, insurance...

Cannot see the point in towing a road going 2cv - isn't that the reason for owning one!! Some people drive 425cc all the way to Spain and back so 300kms is nothing

With two dogs, two solexes and camping gear...plus the wife, I would be lucky to get out of the village in 2nd gear.

But now you have got me thinking - just don't want to risk a good weekend by pushing it without knowing the car 100% just yet.

Towed several barn finds here in France with my A frame which attaches with two bolts to the chassis legs, had light bar on rear and sign saying "en remorque", insured car just for trip and had strange looks from many Gendarmes but they never stopped me.

I have gone ahead and ordered one of these A Frame towing units. It is only a medium trip to La Tchanqu' à Deuch so it will be a good try out of it (will try it up the road first). If it works then I will have saved on the trailer rental (which peeves me to rent one and see it sat next to the tent for 3 days) and I have it for the future and any possible new finds.
If it doesn't work then I will put it on Le Bon Coin and praise the hell out of it

OK - it has arrived.

Looks like it connects to the two towing eyelets on the bottom of the chassis. These are the only things that match up with the bolt.

Firstly it is too low - I would need to jack up the front significantly to get it to fit to the back of my Renault Trafic and secondly, how does this operate the steering. Does it purely rely on the steering to follow once in motion - does the steering just follow or could it turn and drag the front wheels sideways (not to clued up on this).

looks OK - I could make something like that in an afternoon though

But will it work - steering wise.

And how do I jack up the front of the car, easily for transport.

If not it will shag the bumper, front of wings etc.
