Selby should be an easy enough drive from Oldham .....straight over t' M62 and it [M62] virtually by-passes Selby.

The handbook for my car (a 1990) says "Super, 4 star or Premium". That's 99-101, 98 & 97-99 respectively, in pre-unleaded old money octane grades.

The only one of those to mean anything pre-unleaded was "4 star", and 1990 was well into the unleaded era. A whole five years after all new petrol cars in the UK had to, by law, be capable of running on unleaded without additive or modification, and only two years before cats were required on all new petrol cars.

By those grades, it means...

Super (Unleaded) - 97-99RON
4* - 98RON leaded
Premium (Unleaded) - 95RON

I just wouldn't worry. You have the choice between 95, 98 or Diesel. Clearly Diesel's not a great idea. I've never felt any difference with 98 so I use 95. I have done for 7 years and it's not been a problem. I don't see the point in fuel additives. I think they're marketed at the mamby pamby types who worry that their classic cv2 might not like the modern petrol. Bollocks. It'll be fine.

Let me give you the full quote from my handbook...

"Super, 4 star, Premium (97-99 octane)"

I missed off the bit in brackets.

I suppose it depends on whether the handbook changed much over the years? On the back it says 150 GB 4.89, which I would assume means a UK spec April 1989 publication. As you say, it should have been well into the unleaded era by then.
