Thanks, it all makes sense. I just hope the crank is ok. I have been surprised by this engine, so far every nut and bolt has come undone with no problem. All the manifold nuts, the oil cooler, even the heads came off the barrels with no problem.

@ Russ if only it were thus - good unscrewing usually means most of the oil was on the outside and the internal stuff is a mess  the orange ones engine was a rusty furry lump overlooked for years, mint 30k internals @lpgo your English doesn't need translating from checking big end bearings to dead chicken - brilliant illustrates the method perfectly and i suspect that has now "Stuck":lol: @ayjay yep rocking the flywheel will indicate if the mains are really really shot As the crank is supported at the front and the back by quite large bearings any lateral movement of the crank is minimal and throw in a small amount of end float its difficult to decide how much clonk is terminal. The "dead chicken" is to check the big ends. Main rear can be taken off and the journals inspected for scuffs and wear. Anyone else noticed that it always seems to be the offside bigend which fails first when an engine is starved of oil? Mind you, if the driver's hearing aid has flat batteries, it has been known for forward progress to be maintained until all of the bearing material has been stripped from both big ends and distributed through the engine in tiny flakes ... ken

if the grooves in the tops of the valves are still nicley rounded with no sharp edges then youve got a set of collets out of it, oh and some nuts and bolts every cloud eh?
thats the same sort of state the French engine I had been given was in it was one of the filterless cases -gold engine tag and 12mm headed M7 nuts and bolts, cases are the only thing that remain.

I've got another block with crank and cam in which has been sitting minus heads in the damp for the last 4 years, I'm sure it'll be fine, I'll open that up tomorrow.
