I got one of the kits from Maplin which you have to solder together, this worked fine once done, however when I first used it in anger on my way to France there was a smell of burning and a wisp of smoke from the unit!!! The normal wipers functioned Ok,but once in France I checked the Maplin unit and found the following:-

It's obvious that the printed circuit can't carry the load from the wiper motor! I contacted Maplin who have sent me a replacement with no problem.I have not fitted this yet as I'm still in France and the unit is in the UK.
I intend to wire it so that the unit only operates a relay, which in turn will switch the wipers on. There are a pair of 16 amp relays in the Maplin circuit, but as you can seen the thin copper printed circuit,is in no way going to cope.
Hope this is of help

Bridge that printed circuit with a wire.

Chris Bowes (Spogman for 2CVGB) makes an intermittent wiper module.

I've had one on mine for a few years now and it's been fine. It was a piece of cake to fit too.

Try him on: spog@2cvgb.com

Yeah did that to see if the main circuit was ok,but it still started to heat up then failed to work at all! Maybe just a duff kit/part,anyway I will make up the one Maplin sent as a replacement and will still put a relay in circuit.Belt and bracer's maybe but piece of mind

Just a thought but is the wiper motor drawing a high current because the linkage/spindles are dirty/tight?

I did the left hand wiper parking mod on mine some months ago and couldn't believe how tight the linkage was. After dismantling and cleaning everything the wipers fairly speed across the screen now and the motor sounds far less stressed. ;)

A good point 'Bugster',but having had my linkage self destruct I have stripped and greased the whole thing more than once, hence I'm confident there's no binding there at all. However having said that the overheating of the wiper motor when it jammed more than likely wasn't good for it

wiper motors are EXpensive! and i,m told there are no new ones left, we stripped & serviced 2 yesterday, the mechcanism is quite strange inside, the way it locks when switched off and the way it parks, took a little working out-

at the mo my brothers ak van wiper motor wont switch off, one switched on
he has to pull over & turn off the ignition to stop it
weve got it sussed out now

Well having now returned from France I have soldered up the replacement kit, including fitting a larger capacitor,up from 25 mf to 50mf to increase the delay times, as suggested in the kit.I have also tested it and found that the same art of the printed circuit still got very warm.Hence I have used the delay module to switch a 30amp relay, which in turn powers the wiper motor. This means that the printed circuit now only carries the power to activate the relay.
I'm happy with that lets face it 2CV's are not unknown to self ignite so the less risk the better.Maybe one day I will replace the wiper motor having cooked it slightly, when the wipers jammed
