Short plugs, but without the original Citroen cups (spacers). There were very small marks on the plugs and on one piston (visible through the hole at TDC), I used copper washers to raise the plugs, but nothing's changed.
Now I wanted to make sure about the rocker shaft bolts etc., so I backed off the head stud nuts, checked the peg bolts then began tightening the stud nuts again. And the left side upper rear stud broke before I reached the correct torque. I was using a good torque wrench and thightening the nuts gradually in the correct order, so it must be just my effing luck...

could have been the knocking if the stud had stretched and the head was chattering

very good English by the way puts us natives to shame

Post Re: Ignition setting on raised compression - knocking
I'm not happy about the broken stud, but I thought it might have already been weakened yesterday, and the cause of all this. We'll see when I manage to put this thing back together. Fortunately, the stud broke around an inch outside the engine block, where it's thickness changes, so getting it out shouldn't be a problem. But I still have to find a replacement, and that's not so easy...

P.S. Thanks :)

Hmm,
a long stud weighs about 72.8 grams, so with one to use and one for luck, posting to Poland should be around £2.

What do you reckon? ;)

If I can't source it from one of my polish 2cv friends, I'll seriously consider it, but time is of the essence as I've got a whole week off coming :) Thanks for the offer.

I can "think in inches" without actually forcing myself to recalculate from metric when I approximate something, these units make just as much sense in everyday use. But fractions are a nightmare. To me 3/16" is not 3/16 of what I know as an inch, but rather 3/16 of 25,4 mm, so those are a bitch to recaluclate in my head ;) If I want to express a precise dimension, I need to use REAL units ;-))

Post Re: Ignition setting on raised compression - knocking
Because it was the simplest solution for me, I decided to machine a new stud out of high grade steel, installed it in the engine yesterday. The rattling is gone now, today I reattached the wings etc. It runs great and my plugs are finally grey-brown instead of oil clogged black ;) I also changed them to NGK BP7HS as advised here. Will try to get a size 107 primary main jet and see what good that does :)
Thanks to all of you for the help :)

Should not have a p in it
Should be b6hs, or b7hs

Doesn't really matter, properties are all the same except for the projected insulatorr nose (from what I understand, just slightly longer around the electrode).
By the way, the NGK catalogue I looked at lists BP6HS plugs for 2cv as standard, not B6HS.

In my experience a BP... plug creates a slightly noisier engine, which may mean less power.
