What size wire are you using? I'd go for 0.6mm for 2cv thickness steel.

Post Re: Welding help!
is it still a bottle of pure Argon? if so all bets are off as its un charted territory using that on steel. It makes for a very unstable arc

Same reg i aim for about 8l/min flow because its a single stage reg when you firt pull the trigger the gas comes out at a higher rate and drops down to the stable flow - i aim for 6- 8 depending on inside or outside draughty or not. 6mm Lincoln wire and any passivated or greyish deposit flap wheeled off till its shiny. Welder set at 25-30amp. Wire speed ? out the box because ive modified the welder to have a separate feed and so the settings are all out.

The VW which is rusty zintec and waxed on the back i can just burn away all day with no problems - its about 0.8-0.9mm can run a 10 mm bead before i have to stop for burn through, butted joint with little or no panel gap welder at 30amp

Have you cleared all the poxy gassless crap out of your shroud and made sure all the gas holes are clean
have you blown down the wire liner to make sure there is no crud in there?
If it has a plastic liner bin it and get a steel one - rusty wire drags plastic particles up to the torch where it melts and acts like hot glue sticking the wire.

Your welder only goes don to 35Amps and i said before that you are going to have to take it easy to start with just do a series of spots one overlapping the next weld for about 2-3mm stop wit till the red glow dissapears thru the No9 shade then go again

post your pics on Mig welding forum and youll get loads of advice - remember 2cv steel is about 0.55mm.

Hi Sean,
didn't know about the pure argon, but that would also explain the 'tall' welds.

And as Rus said and ive said you will have to take some time getting used to your completely new set up

is there any way of hooking up gas to your old welder? one change at a time may make it an easier transition

Well I do have plenty of practice but it all GASSLESS. I'm also listening to the sound from the weld, it doesn't sound as it is right. Sometimes no sound at all, just hissing but burning OK other times the familiar rattling sound, then suddenly jumping all over the place.

Argon! unstable ark !!
with a bit of roller slip,up the tension on the feed

Looking at the welds, you are pushing the torch as opposed to dragging it aren't you?

thats not clear statement - do you recomend pushing or pulling?
I push making sure the wire is in the front of the puddle but torch is pretty much square on to the work layed over to the right sligtly and i usually weld right to left with my right and opposite for the other hand
spare hand is on the work and the torch resting on it.

They look a little like Viking has been dragging the torch as opposed to pushing it, which is wrong and won't give a decent weld. Torch should only really ever be pushed. Likewise, you shouldn't ever weld downhill.

You can get away with it on thin stuff, but its not good practice. It was just a thought though. I don't understand the settings on Vikings welder, min/max? What amperage is each setting? Is that all the adjustment you have?
