Bumpstops limit the travel of the rear swing arms. If the bumpstops arnt there and the arms move too far up you risks the springs compressing solid within the spring cans. Once this happens you risk the tie rods failing under tensile loading, which is guranteed to spoil your day. Dont ask me how I know this.

basically dont over load your car or lower it with no bump stops :P
