Ahhhhh, I see......
Well, since that noisy bearing has been annoying me since day one, I'm gonna get it changed anyways....

Russell wrote: What I mean is, I can't see why play in a wheel bearing would feel different to play in a kingpin or steering components WHEN DRIVING. If the wheel is flapping about like a prick in a shirtsleeve because of the failing of any one of those components, it's likely to have the same effect felt through the steering wheel. I didn't mean when jacked up and wobbling the wheel by hand. except that a wheel bearing that's so loose that you feel it flapping about would have been howling like a ( insert suitable "street" similie of choice) and unlikley to have gone un noticed POP. checking the KP its often better to put a finger on top of the arm and feel the top of the housing moving sean

+1 on both counts. Also wondering about track rod ends which have zero visible movement, as that sometimes means that the joint hasn't been centralised correctly, with the wheels on the ground. ken. I was taking a long fastish right hand bend and Im getting a shudder thro the steering Regular turns are fine and absolutely zero shake/shudder on straight roads. Just got a new MOT last week so I'm assuming nothing is obviously hanging off or outwith normal bounds. Any thoughts? Cheers Gerry Check your steering rack guide ring + the guide and other parts of rack components

 Re: Shudder.......UPDATE 30/12
OK, I was totally wrong, and, I'm rubbish at checking for play I took the car up to Sean and it took him 2 mins to show me the trackrod end flapping around and the marginal kingpin.......I'll know better next time, still, I was right about the noisy wheel bearing I've decided that I'll also leave the job to someone who obviously knows what they are doing ! Thanks Sean ! Cheers Gerry

 Re: Shudder.......UPDATE 30/12
Was it offside or nearside which had the 'fit where it hits' track rod end? ken

ken wrote: Was it offside or nearside which had the 'fit where it hits' track rod end? ken Its not a crackpot theory the loaded wheel is pushed into the track rod and its when the loose trackrod side is on the inside of the corner, the un weighted wheel, that its able to flutter. the tracking of the inside wheel always looks odd and it was something GH and myself were going to look in to. any way it was "full house" on wear nothing major and all having recently passed an MOT the bearing not the best KP kind of past its best and certainly worse when it had been knocked back down and a very worn track rod end which would have been the main cause of the flutter.
