Post Re: Servicing an A series
My timing light got it spot on but with the strobe it's not right, I used chris's marks he put on, you can see it advancing but it's not a solid White line, so what does that mean?

The teeth ar marked in total 8 of them. From rod in flywheel onwards. But I can never work it out  what imi looking at

Yes,1 mark when the rod is installed, and the other,7 teeth to the right of the first one.Simples.
Anti clockwise as you are looking at it from the front of the engine.Turn it from right to left.

a little bit of knowledge eh!
never fails to confuse static point ie peg in the hole is for the engine at rest - stopped- switched off! Dynamic timing is for the engine actually running and that will alter the appearance of the timing mark esecially if idle is on the fast side. also by setting the timing to max advance correctly any error in the advance will show up as an error when the engine is at idle.....where its unlikley to cause any problems whatsoever.

More than one timing mark at full advance is "scatter" its when the firing point on the points cam is out slightly and each spark occurs at a slightly diffrent point.

you can swap the cam over 180* to see if that helps

beyond that and something I always do to the racers is to re set the nose of the camshaft so that each spark occurs at exactly the same point.

but its not going up here as its a recipie for disaster for the ham fisted and the hopless fiddlers
