dave,
it's most unlikely to be lack of fuel which is causing poor hot starting, much more likely to be valve clearances too small or maybe plug gaps too wide.

As regards timing with a strobe, here's a copy of a page from Citroen's workshop manual describing how to check the amount of centrifugal advance using a strobe.

Back in 1975, when this manual was prepared, a zenon strobe and a rev counter would have been relatively expensive, whereas the pair can now be picked up for around £30.
This is a handy little piece of kit, as it does more than just indicate your engine's rpm.

Curve C is the one which matches your engine and it's worth noting that at 1,000 rpm, the ignition will already have advanced by between 1 and 5 'crankshaft' degrees.

From the description you've given, the amount of centrifugal advance does need adjusting, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the weights need replacing, nor that the strobe needs to be chucked in the bin.

The last 2 cars I've serviced have both been Ami 8s, both had the timing wildly advanced despite being previously serviced elsewhere and at least one of them needs its barrels and pistons replacing because the timing had not been checked dynamically.
Both started fine, even with the timing about 3 teeth too advanced, however the damage wouldn't have occurred until they were at full throttle on the open road.

Ipgo,I havent checked the idle speed with a tacho.Could be that the idle speed is too fast. Will check it tommorow.
Sean,I havent invested in shiney trinkets, the Luminition was already fitted to the car when I bought it.The yellow coil I had already bought for my other car so I just fitted it to eliminate the coil. The engine isnt overheating, its just hard to start when hot(as opposed to cold).I am aware that it could be the fuel running back from the carb, will know that tommorow. And I do know how to use a strobe.I was just asking about the idle timing really. How critical is it to have it at 8 degrees? If its to far advanced will the engine be hard to start?

Thanks Sean and Ken. :)
So the idle timing I have will be ok,and the fact its one tooth advanced at full advance is ok.Would the Luminition system use the weights in the point box?
I will check the valve Gaps and let you know.

Right,re-set the valve gaps, both exhaust were tight :x ,one inlet tight :x and the other loose.
Now,the engine is much quieter :o ,and seems to run smoother.I had a bit of a fluffy spot at mid throttle, thats gone too :D .Hot starting not sure yet. Will let you know in a few days.
Thanks again sean and ken,or ken and sean  ,dave.
