Russell, you are right, of course. But only if one could be arsed to remove them from the car, pay to have them shot, or have the equipment to do so themselves.

In my case it's couldn't be, wouldn't do and don't have. :P

I've always been lucky enough to have a pile of arms and worked at a shotblasters...

Leaving them on the car is inevitably going to make painting the upper end very difficult. Given how easy they are to remove (the Burton tool for the bearing ring is only £20-ish), and how badly most 2cvs need the bearings cleaning & regreasing, it makes sense to do the job properly.

Ok, here goes:

Jack it up and take the wheels off.

Take the three M9/14mm bolts out and drop the front shocker plate down.

Take the splitpin out and undo 32mm hubnut until the nut is covering the end of the thread, then knock it with a soft hammer to drift the driveshaft ou, once it moves take the nut off and withdraw the driveshaft.

Take the R clip thing out and the knife edge, then push it into the can a bit so it's out of the way. Don't unscrew the tie rod and then, when you put it all back together, it should be the same hieght.

knock the locktabs down and undo the two m7/11mm bolts on the steering arm.

Take the splitpin out of the arm bearing nut thing that was behind the shocker plate. You can use the special tool or smack it round with a big screwdriver, but everybody will tell me I'm a twat for doing that.

The arm won't fall off, the bearing is a tight fit (as it should be) in the front axle. To get it off use a deadblow hammer whilst supporting the arm off the bumpstop, remembering to put a clean rag on the floor, because the bearing *will* fall into the dirt and shite on the driveway. It might take a bit of knocking to get it moving.

When you're cleaning the arm up, make sure you dont bollocks the inside of the arm bearing housing or the wheel bearing. Separate the hub carrier from the arm by taking the kingpin out first if you have to.

When you refit it, buy new splitpins and use plenty of grease in the axle bearings. Also replace the locktabs on the steering arms.

Don't do this right now though, wait until more knowledgeable folk have corrected or inserted bit's I've missed here!
