It sounds like something is maladjusted because if there was only 10mm left in the shackle then the car should be quite low, none of the standard cars I've taken apart have had anything like that little left in the shackle. All buying a longer shackle will achieve is having the tie rod further in the shackle, it wont solve whatever is not right. I wonder if either; The can's on the right way round, the threaded mounts are tight all one way (ie, have been adjusted to compress the rubber the opposing end as hard as it can) or if the tie rod is seated incorrectly in the spring cup (inside the can).

Funnily enough on the 4x4 we have the opposite problem and to get extra ground clearance we have to shorten the tie rods. Perhaps we should send you the bits we chop off so you can make yours longer!

Thing is though, I'm not actually trying to lower mine, just get the front down and the back up. *in theory* the amount i have screwed in at the back should have her high and the amount i've pulled out at the front should have dropped the nose but she still looks rather... level, when you fill her up for a weekend away the towballs on th ground and the front bumpers scarping the sky

Re: How much tie rod thread should be left in the end shackl
Sam, I'd have my doubts as to whether anyone could manage to fit the canisters back to front without noticing, however if the cans have been apart for repair and someone's mixed up the springs or tie rods, that could explain why you're running out of thread on the rear tie rods. For the record, front tie rods on later 2CVs are 593mm long, rear tie rods are 632mm long. For the springs, it's the other way round, with the shorter (stronger) spring being fitted to the rear... Because your car is fitted with a towbar, the back end will sit slightly lower than if that ballast wasn't attached, but it should still have been possible to adjust it to the correct 'nose down, tail up' attitude if all was in order with the spring canisters. ken

ken wrote: Sam I'd have my doubts as to whether anyone could manage to fit the canisters back to front without noticing, well they forgot to reconnect the hand-break, used self tapping screws to attach the body to the chassis and filled the rear sweeps with marshmallow and polly filler... I keep finding things Russell wrote: Sam, check the cans 'AV' marking is at the front of the can. just been to check but couldn't really see anything, where exactly do I look? ken wrote: For the record, front tie rods on later 2CVs are 593mm long, rear tie rods are 632mm long. cheers Ken, I'll check they're the right length too. Interestingly, the first time I adjusted my ride height was in 2008 iirc and when I did it, getting to the tie rods involved scraping, wire brushing and general de gunking to find them. Turning them required extreme force. Since I did that I've ket them clean and can adjust her with a pair of pliers. It seems odd that they got that gunked up in 2 years. Could they have changed the chassis without disconnecting the tie rods?
