All I need to know now is wtf a 'dissertation' is, sounds a bit middle class and collegy to me that does, can't I just write about it? ;)

Old-Nail,
at a guess, I'd reckon that the accounts advising that the engine and gearbox need to be moved forwards will have been written by one of those 'armchair mechanic' types, mostly active on the keyboard instead of under the bonnet.

I'm not too sure how many gearbox rewinds I've done, but the vast majority were carried out 'at the scene of the crime', which more often than not was near the end of someone's driveway.

I'd forget about finding 2 screwdrivers, btw, but get hold of a set of these instead...

The one second from the right is the best shape for 'edging' the synchromesh cone on the second gear pinion into the position where it can go back into place.

Can it be done in situ? I'm confused as I've read different accounts, some say yes, others say the engine and gearbox need to be moved forward a little to remove the selectors.

It is important to mention that, if the thread is ruined on the 2nd/3rd sliding pinion and it needs replacement, the engine gear box has to slide forward in order to push the selector rods out backward. If not the lower firewall is in the way.

Locking the selector ring should be done with a screw driver not a center punch. Screw driver locking has a much better locking. This one opened after locking 3000 km later.

Two types are found, one with soft metal and one with hard metal. The soft metal can open the locking if driven hard but not the hard metal ring. You'll know when locking the ring, if hard or soft.

Ken I've used the 'buy it now' facility for those thingy-majigs so I'll soon have a set of those thanks. Now I have to stop myself messing about until they arrive.

Viking if the threads are damaged then I'll replace the gearbox entirely and put my spare one in, so everything will be coming out anyway in that case. The photographs are helpful as I find it difficult to envisage what part needs to go back where!

Hmmm... I can feel one of those 'dissertation' things coming on....

Well you'll have too. My new special tools won't be with me for a few days so I'll have to find some other mischief to get into in the meantime, and anyway, vicarious living is bad for you. ;)
