Re: sorry for the vague question....
Cheers, Ken.
Having an idiot light is the least of the reasons I was suggesting for fitting a 'modern' alternator, the main plus points being the higher output and the doing-away of the separate regulator. (Mind you, I don't think my '89 Special has anything at all - no gauge, no light...)
Yes, I agree a voltmeter is the best guide to charging performance, but modern alternators rarely go wrong in a way that would damage your electrics or battery, and therefore an idiot light would suffice. After all, it does on modern cars.
I'm not suggesting that swapping the existing alternator for a 'newer' type is something that 'should' be done, but knowing that there is standard type available that will fit is useful; if either my alternator OR voltage regulator fail on my 2CV, then I will seriously consider simplifying the whole thing and fitting the 'new' type alternator instead.

TBH, I rather suspect you'll find a 2cv alternator and VR a _huge_ amount easier to find than a two-pot Wheezer alternator...

Re: sorry for the vague question....
Thanks, all. It's good to know there are options out there.
Just something to consider if the original stuff goes kaput.
(I now remember I did this to a Triumph GT6 I had a loooong time ago. Dynamo & regulator out, alternator in. Very straight-forward indeed.)
