what was wrong with it that it needed to be changed anyway?

Errrm ... I broke it. One of the springs on the spindle was broken so I thought it looked like a relatively simple job to remove a spindle from an already knackered carb and put it on mine. It's not as simple as it looks and I ended up with two knackered carbs. :) I bought two off ebay for £40, so I do have another one to try.

Well, that feels much better. After a lot of farting about with the first new carb, I gave up on it and stuck the second new carb on. What a difference! 80mph down the A40 just outside Ross, scarcely much slower round the island and 70mph back up the hill. That's how they should go, and I can have a play with the other carb at my leisure. thanks for all the advice folks. 8-)

What you need is a speeding ticket showing that speed, something to frame and hang on the wall.

Nah, any idiot can do 80- downhill on a dual carriageway. What I need is some kind of ticket for drifting a 2CV round a roundabout. :D
