Yes - my main concern is one of comfort - it's nice to have the ventilation but at the expence of potentially fractured elbows - not really an alternative. I'm just looking for a simple (and practical) solution.

The problem with the bendy wire bits is that they get in the way so much - especially when parking.

The good thing about the bendy wire bits is that they can be bent. I used to have mine so that with a tiny bit of persuasion they could be pushed over the window catches when not in use, and be held out of the way there.

The wire clips of yesteryear are far more substantial than what seems to be on the market today. My dad bought a pair from ECAS c1990 & they are still doing their job today. No flexing or 'jarring' & they don't rattle about like todays offerings.

These are a decent alternative - i bought them at Rochefort a couple of years ago:

they are carved out to fit the profile of the door when the window's open. It has the advantage over the wire clip in that you can position it wherever you want & it's 'adjustable' to a point; the closer you slide it to the window pivot point the wider the window will open.

The disadvantages are: they aren't always to hand as the wire clips are & have to be removed to close the window, meaning they can easily be misplaced.

I had a pair of wire clips that wouldnt fit at all,the distance between holes about 15mm too short, and they would have only held the window open an inch anyway  not a patch on the old ones

yes indeed, in a carefree Gallic fashion. It's the way.

I have one of the old wire jobbies, it clips down over the window clip when not in use thus taking up no room.

Otherwise I think the cut foam is possibly the best idea, or just opening the vent flap and donning your driving gloves.

Is there not a risk of the cut foam coming off and disapearing up the road?

Can't you buy that stuff from Hobbycraft and make your own? I would guess you can buy quite a bit for not a great amount and if you spend a bit of time fashioning one to fit decently, you can use it as a template for lots more, so if you lose one or two...who cares? Besides, you can then sell them at camps and make some money :D
