I'm noticing a small loss of brake fluid over a period even when the car has not been driven, not massive but enough to trigger the warning light.
Possibly from the reservoir area. Is it likely to be just the reservoir or more serious?

Could be anything. Its time to look underneath at all the pipes / flexibles, rear brake drums for sign of leaks and front drums/calipers and don't leave out looking at the master cylinder. Yes, It may be a cracked reservoir, but I would want to check this out before I trusted my life on a leaky system.

Also check inside the car, at the brake-pedal erea. Sometimes the master brake cilinders leaks to the inside of the car.

I couldn't see any obvious cracks in the reservoir.
I'll check out the pipes and the pedal area.
I see that seals are obtainable as well as the reservoir itself.
How is it retained?

Yes, wiggle and pull.

Those seals under reservoir, are very often leaking at cold. Because of seal material, nitrile, it shrinks a little. All my cars have LHM and every of them leaves a green spot under at winters, Dyanes under LHM reservoir, Xm and Sm from many places where they doesn't leak at summer...

However, I think you will find that it's much easier to disengage the reservoir by pushing or pulling it to one side, so that the bayonet-shaped prongs 'roll' out of the seals...

Thanks for the info. A couple of new seals is probably worthwhile.
The fluid loss is certainly worse in this cold weather and the MoT chap recently had a good poke around underneath and didn't spot any leaks etc.

My only leak( so far) was where the rough welds on one of the rear suspension arms wore through the brake pipe.

I've got a couple of the seals on their way and I'll change them anyway. The latest fluid loss took place whilst the car was standing for about ten days over the Christmas period. I haven't ruled out a leak from the pipes so I'll get the car over the pit when the garage is clear.
I had a couple of advisories re the kingpins and I haven't renewed the brakepads for a while so I'll be giving it a good going over when the weather warms up a bit.
Whilst on the subject of brakes, I don't have a rear hub extractor. Any recommendations?
