Post Which Way Round?
I'm replacing the flywheel which I took off many moons ago. I'm fitting a new seal, the small one which is located on the end of the crankshaft and can obviously be seen in the centre of the flywheel. Which way round does it go? And what does it actually seal? I can't see there being any oil in the vicinity.

flat face towards the clutch - keeps the grease in the spigot bush from getting contaminated with clutch dust and drying out.

Thanks very much for that information but why does it always lead to another question?
As I'm rebuilding the engine, well not actually rebuilding the engine or else I wouldn't be asking this question but I'm fitting new barrels, pistons, crankshaft oilseals, cleaning oil cooler fitting new seals, oil stem seals (be a question on these soon!) clutch, all reasonably obvious things. Spigot bush?! I haven't looked for it yet. Is it obvious? How do I check for wear? Does it need repacking with grease? I might as well check it now I really don't want to be stripping engines down again.

In the end of the crank,it will be either a brass coloured bush or a needle roller bearing.If its the bush,then I would change it anyway.If its a needle bearing,depends on the condition.

bearing is easily sourced (12x18x16 calcar or oiltite) remove the old one by packing it with grease then fitting a 12mm bolt hit it with a hammer and the hydraulic action will force the old out - soak the new one in engine oil

as its the outward support for the un available input shaft, a couple of ££ to preserve that is worth it

Thanks for that. I hope it's as easy as it sounds!
So can I take it, the only lubrication it gets is from its initial soaking in oil? I've offered in an input shaft and obviously there is no room for grease yet there is an oil seal? In a reply to an earlier posting the oilseal is to stop clutch dust entering and drying it out. Am I missing something obvious like the end of the input shaft is coated in grease before it enters the spigot bush? Sorry if I appear a bit dim.

not necessary grease there isn't much of a speed differance between the input and the flywheel only at start up and gear changes most of the time they are locked together by the clutch.

its a dust seal to keep dust out rather than oil in

Packed out the bush with grease. Tried a 12mm bolt and a piece of 12mm beech dowel but can't shift the bush. Both dowel and bolt (dowel in particular shows an amazing amount of suction when trying to remove after a being hit)are a very tight fit would this suggest that the bush is not badily worn and hence not necessary to replace?

I've inserted an input shaft to test for wear but this is difficult to tell as the part into the bush is tapered and because of the length of the shaft I believe it acts as a lever and there will always be a little movement but perhaps I'm wrong.

I've ordered another bush so when it comes I'll see how the shaft feels in that.

The engine has done about 90,000 miles would the bush be significantly worn?
