 strange reving
i doint know best how to describe this but ill give it ago, a friend and i where driving down the road today, and i noticed when i was in 4th at about 40, if i put my foot to the floor the engine would rev really high (as if it wasn't connected to wheels) i then tested clutch, clutch is not slipping, and when i come off the gas pedal the revs drops (sounds like a auto transmition me and my friend where laughing our heads of) but at the same time it concerned me alot, i then got to the workshop, and changed my plugs, it seemed to run alright after this, but it was doing this wierd revvy thing for a few weeks, (like only a tiny tiny bit kinda you think oh well itll be ok)
wondering if anyone could shed some light as to whether it is plugs or something more serious or easy (to put my mind at ease before the london to brighton!!) Thanks

 Re: strange reving
How did you test the clutch? If the engine revs independant of road speed, then I can't see it being anything else.

 Re: strange reving
i slipped it into 3rd at about 35 and it didnt slip (engine revs rose as the pull on the wheels ) and also i managed to wheel spin it on normal road when pulling away (un intentianable) when i took the old plugs our they where pink (the bits that below the point normally white)

 Re: strange reving
Think about how the engine, gearbox and clutch work, there's no physical way the engine revs could rise unless there's a loss of friction somewhere, either betwixt engine and gearbox, or gearbox and road. Unless there was lots of wheelspin (unlikely in 4th!) and the revs definatly rose out of time with road speed, I'm certain the clutch is at fault. I don't understand how the plugs could be at fault?
Possibly it just wants adjusting, there's two nuts on the bulkhead which the cable passes through, IIRC a 16mm and a 19mm, they lock together.
I might be wildly wrong here though, possibly I'm not understanding the fault correctly.

 Re: strange reving
ok let me explain,
basically i didnt get wheel spin in 4th just to clear that one up, as pigs dont fly!!
i got wheel spin in 1st pulling away (didnt dump clutch or high revs at all )
its when your in 4th and your doing 50 and when u gas it the revs go very high and u come of the gas a bit and its fine...

Classic clutch slip symptoms.

 Re: strange reving
Like Russ said, it may just be that the cable needs adjusting. There should be between 20-25mm free play at the clutch pedal. Any less and you're running the risk of it slipping. If it's been doing it for a while there's a fair chance the clutch will knackered now anyway.
Otherwise I would think the cause is likely to either be oil contamination, or the clutch is just worn out! Either way, it will need changing. The wings and headlamps need to come off, and the engine needs to come out, but it's not too bad a job, and it's a good way to get to know the car better!
