 Fitting 3-point rear seat belts.

Post Fitting 3-point rear seat belts.
Since the main mounting relies only on the inner wing - thin steel - could fitting an upper shoulder point be as simple as bolting through a dome-headed bolt from t'outside at the required height? (Yes, of course a captive nut could be welded there instead, but I don't have a welder. And don't want the paint damaged. And don't want the metal distorted...)

It doesn't - or shouldn't - rely only on a single thin skin of steel. There should be a large and thicker load-spreading plate behind the inner wing with the nut welded to that. Same with the inner mount points - they go into a large "saddle" bolted directly to the chassis.

You'd need a similar plate on the outside of the shell, to prevent the upper mount bolt just pulling through the body side.

Ah, didn't realise the lower wing mount was reinforced - just assumed it was standard thickness.

Fair enough.

What would be required, I wonder - a large 'penny' washer? 50mm diameter? More?

How do the 'kits' I've seen advertised work?

Just bolt the extra belt to one of the already existing mounting points in the boot,and the anchor to the other mounting point [use a slightly longer than standard bolt] .....and then run the belt round the seat to the required shoulder height.
I did the above years ago when my daughter used to sit in the rear seat ....I only had the one "over the shoulder" belt though.

.....and before anyone notices [or comments] ....yes,I have fitted BX seats since then,which means that anyone sitting in the rear has very little leg room [unless wifey moves her seat forward] .....but 99% of my journeys are now just done with myself & my wife.

You can see the size of the lower reinforcement from this repair panel...

Bear in mind the upper is going to take more severe loadings in a hard impact.

tm2CVs, yes, I can see that the force on the top fixing will be the greatest.

Terry, are you suggesting using the existing rear wing anchor point for both the reel and the belt 'end', and then directing the belt over the rear seat top so that it's at shoulder height? I guess this would then mean that the upper seat frame itself would be taking the load in the event of an accident? I suppose a seat belt guide - like you get mounted on the headrest on many cars - could locate the belt in the correct place.

I'm trying to be realistic here and am simply trying to improve the current - in my view, barely adequate - static lap belt for my two kids. Being 'realistic' means taking into account the use the car will have when my kids are on board - generally taking them to school (where the speed never goes above 30mph) or short trips out on country roads where the speed touches 50mph only on rare occasions.

I am not trying to sort out a safety system that complies with modern-day standards! I know that my 2CV is simply not as 'safe' in an accident as modern day cars (er, or most other cars of 25-year vintage...). I am simply looking for an 'improvement'.

I welcome your thoughts/ideas!

Whatever you do to the belts, you're going to have to accept that - if the 2cv gets hit hard - those kids are belted into a very crumpled bit of tin - and as soon as the metal the belt mounts are fixed to starts to move, all bets are off as regards the solidity of the mounts.

One end of the seat belt is bolted to one of the boot floor anchors,and the extra anchor to the other boot floor anchor.
There is no "reel" involved .....I merely measured how much length of belt was needed and took it to my local "Speedy Shoe Repairs [and keys cut] Shop" ;) .....and asked the guy to stitch it to length.
I fully realise [and did so at the time] that the seat would take a lot of the strain in the event of a collision ....but coupled with the fact that our daughter also had her lap belt on .....I felt it was a safer [if not perfect] option.
I guess a seat belt guide,fastened to the seat may well have been even safer,but I never thought of it at the time .....and lets face it,in the event of a head-on smash something has got to take the strain ......and 2CV's are hardly the sturdiest of cars,whichever area one may choose to anchor a seat belt to.
