Viking,
reckon you've got that '@rse about face', as the resistance should be at its lowest when the tank is full.

I tested 4 new senders the other day and they read under 15 ohms when 'full' increasing to about 340 ohms 'empty'...

Viking,
yes, it is just a variable resistor, so there's a possibility it would work, but I don't have a value for the 'empty' resistance of a 6 volter. :(

IIRC, for a 12 volter, it's 'around' 300 ohms on empty falling to zero ohms when full.

Would a 12 V tank sender work on 6 V? Is the unit no more than a resister controlling the earth?

Cheers

It worked. I fitted a 12V sender in the tank with 6V. Needle on the fuel indicator working well. Tested the 12V on the bench, showing max 190 ohms on full, slowly moving down to 0 reaching empty.

Ya bugger, the other way around 0 ohm on full but still ''only'' 190 ohms on empty

Thought you'd got hold of an export model for down under, where gravity works in the opposite direction...

Gravity is not working. Can't get more that this (tested 3 sender units)
Going beyond 193 it will drop to 0
How did you get 340 ohms?

Forgot to add this.

This is what the sender looks like inside. Don't know if the wiring is specific to 12V ? It works on 6 V
