its simple to get a big can of spay paint from 2cvcity

Why?

Aerosol can is shit
It doesnt harden, wipe it with acetone or anything like that and its ruined,,

It never goes on right either

Sam. If he can get a professional to paint the 2k id stick with it personally.
Much harder and durable. Although it may 'look wrong'. But its still good imo

2 pack is nasty stuff you need to protect yourself properly including eyes and skin as you can absorb the toxic stuff through your skin. Paper suite rubber gloves and the best quality mask you can afford, the type for dust are just not suitable, plus eye protection also.

Getting spay jobs done is expensive depending how you look at it.I had my new front wings done last year cost me £200,for that they were treated with etch primer, chip coated on the under side, oven cured finish and then the underside sprayed heavily with waxoyle to ensure protection in any of the joints between the inner and outer wing pressings. To me money well spent as the paint is expensive, then the cost of proper protection, the hire of suitable spray gun ( I have an airless one).Having somewhere to do the spraying, outside is ok but you have the risk of dust, flies and the local cat walking over your work. Not forgetting drift from the spraying which you wouldn't want on anything else. But the main thing is I'm no sprayer hence if I f*** it up,then I have to spent more money to put it right, whereas the pro has none of those worries.

I have done quite a lot with cellulose spray cans with very good results although mainly small areas.the trick with cans is to ensure you shake them for the time stated on the can, then some more and shake in between coats. The actual temperature of the paint affects the finish, to cold and you will not get a fine misting of the paint,it follows that the surface you are painting should not be cold or to hot for that matter, as both will affect the finish.Somewhere in the area of room temp is about right. I was advised years ago to drop the cans of paint in a bucket of hot water and not to use them until the can temperature remains the same during shaking. My last advice is make sure you dry the cans thoroughly and always invert the can and spray to clear the nozzle as advised on the can.
Here endeth he lesson :-)

Just as a foot note on the strength and durability of cellulose paint,I did my crash helmet and finished with 2 or 3 coat of clear, all flated down between coats and the finish was a mile deep. I then having only finish the job for a few days dropped the bloody thing :-(, the result was a tiny mark that polished out!!

Post Re: Painting Advice
I've only ever painted 2 full cars.
The first was in 2 Pack and I used full airfed mask, suit etc etc. Was a real pain in a small garage pulling around 2 airlines. Misting in the mask, ( a proper Wilson professional one), was also an issue for me. The finish was shiny without too much work but was also a bit brittle, easily chipped, (most likely down to my application!)

Car 2 was done in Cellulose, was much easier, MUCH more forgiving of my mistakes but also took a lot longer. The shine is fantastic after lots of (mainly hand ), buffing and cutting back.

Word of warning though, Modern unleaded marks Celly.....to the point that it needs G10, elbow grease and polishing to remove the marks....I have become much more careful when filling up.

I can't imagine a paint shop will take paint back because you're scared of it.

I will get the missus to spray it on and I will watch thru the window

Rememer, France doe snot really do "Health and Safety" so I should be fine with a sock over my nose, surely ;)

But I did buy a proper mask (not air fed) and I am only going to do some little bits - when it comes to the van I intend to take it over to the next village to the paint guy who has done quite a few oldies in the past. He seems very enthusiastic to take on the painting - just need to pick a day when he is sober :?

Cheers for frightening me to death though, all advice taken.

Tripyrenees, please take heed of the safety advice given. If your 2-pack is the isocyanate stuff, then you are risking seriously unpleasant problems.

I recall from my yoof a professional sprayer telling me of when he did the wing of a car. Thinking it would be a quick job, he didn't bother moving the compressor - which also fed his mask - outside. So it sucked up the 'poisoned' garage air and fed it to his mask! He was telling me this as a joke against himself, but went all serious when he told me how hellish he felt afterwards - he really thought he'd wrecked his lungs permanently, and as a cove in your 20's that wouldn't have been a good thing to do.

I'm guessing if this stuff isn't cleaned out really well from your gun, it'll 'set' and cause problems too? Is it really worth the hassle for just spraying a couple of 'small parts' - it'll take hours of work to spray for 10 minutes...

Cellulose might have some relative drawbacks, but it's hard to beat for sheer usability. And you can get a cracking finish with it too.
