I use a small electrical screwdriver which fits through the square holes in the end. Get the tip behind the tag on the other end and lever it over so that the tag hooks into a hole. Get it as tight as possible.
Then use pincers as per Seans pic to pinch up the 'squash' section.

Tools needed etc As already said,use a pair of pincers,they should close them,although the correct Knipex tool is a better bet as the blades are cut much thinner,and they have cutting edges on two sides (as per a pair of pincers,but also on the side of the blades),also very expensive.
