Post What does Luminition do?
The D*lly came fitted with luminition. It starts first time, everytime and runs nicely so I've never questioned it, but was does luminition actually do?

Reason I ask, is that dollys coming up for a pre wm thorough going over and I'm wondering if I need to replace the points and condenser?

I luminition somehow prevents wear on those parts, it would seem unnecessary.

Hi Sam .....there is'nt points & condensor on the lumi system. It works via an infra red light being interupted by a "chopper" thus causing a spark.
I fitted a Lumi system to my [1988] 2CV sometime around 1996 and I have'nt touched it since .....although if you wanna be on the safe side you could include a set of points & a condensor in your spares, you'll also need a new points box,as fitting Lumi means altering the existing points box and afterwards its impossible to fit points again.....[the spindle the points pivot on needs removing]
I must admit I've always carried a spare set of points,a condensor & points box set in my spares [I'm a bit of a pessimist  ] .....but I've never need them.
The only weak point I've found with Luminition is the conector block with 3 wires going into it [IIRC they're red, blue & black :? ] ....it should be near the main wiring loom just forward of the carb. .......the block is the weak point and the connections can be a bit "iffy".

hth
best regards
T.

Sam,
the Lumenition you've got uses an infrared optical switch in place of the points and condenser.

Once it's been fitted and set up correctly, no maintenance is required, except maybe hooking a strobe up every 10,000 miles or so to check that the mechanical advance mechanism is working as it should...

Excellent, thank you chaps. I won't need to pick up a points/condenser for servicing then. RE that connector block Terry, mine's on the inner NS wing - which I need to disconnect to change the king pin :?

Thanks for the timing advice Ken.. having done 60k miles or so its probably a bit over due

Just because there's no need to take the fan off to check the points, don't overlook checking that the oil cooler's clean occasionally.

This is a good point, last did this when I replaced the fan back in feb. I'll certainly do it again before the wm - change the fan belt too.

;) You will need a points and condenser because my last set went on your van.
