just shoved my probe - oo-er - up the back of the plug

Fair enough, if it rocks your boat... :lol:

Anyhow, it's worth trying the same implement on the 2 terminals of the voltage regulator.

The larger one ( 8mm head/5mm thread) should show 12 volts heading in, whereas the smaller one (7mm head/4mm thread) should be 12 volts at stall & idle, etc, etc.
