there's really nothing new about the concept of setting the timing at full advance,

I'm sure its not a new concept, just new to me thats all :D

I'm going to have a closer look at those advance weights next time I'm in there.

Post Re: Pinking
I set the timming with my new strobe last weekend as I said before and everything seemed ok drove to work this week which is 17 miles down main roads and daul carrige way which was fine but coming home I went through town and after a few mins it started to pink again it seems to me like its overheating. I have taken it out this morning on a short run and gone slow so to try and get it to do it again which it did and it seems to be just the drivers side cylinder that is pinking. My next idea is to have the heads off and to lap the valves and heads in and check the oil feed pipe to that head and also re set the vavle clearences.

Ken
when i posted the bed comment it said posted at 01:42! honest ;)

Chris its still too advanced.
mark the flywheel as per Kens post and be carefull how you count the teeth, then strobe it and increase the revs untill the mark stops moving( it may jump about a bit if the cam is a bit worn or a lot if the condenser is on the fritz). then when the engine is racing and no more movement of the advance rotate the points box anti clockwise till the 2 marks line up.

it shouldnt pink after that

Sean

Chris and Sean,
but is this noise really pinking?

You're far, far more likely to have an engine pink out on the open road, not when pottering around town.
I'd also find it very difficult to pin down the sound of pinking to one cylinder... :?

Copied this from the 2CVGB forum, where I'd posted it last week...

This video demonstrates how sensitive an engine can be to ignition timing, with only a few degrees too much advance sufficient to trigger pinking.

Note that the audio feed is filtered to concentrate on the frequency where pinking can be most easily detected, but you should get the idea, I hope.
A random, high pitched 'crackling' sound is not one which you should be hearing from any spark ignition engine when it's working hard.
