Post Holding the hood back
How does one tie the hood back when it is rolled up?

Cheers

erm the popper strap things above the rear quarter lights I think. Yeah, I roll the hood back then feed the popper strap through over the hood roll (but under the metal bar) and attach it to the external popper... I think. It is two in the morning.

Ah, you're an "innie", rather than an "outie", are you? I'm an "outie" - then the outside of the roof is the bit that gets grubby.

I wonder how many drivers open just the front half of the roof only. I used to do this with my previous 2CVs until one day a gust of wind grabbed at the fold of roof canvas and damaged both sides where it's clipped on.

humm, my hood seems to be lacking a few bits, if I roll it back I end up with the poles all over the floor and rubber hanging down the sides of the car. Still... intending to get a new hood soon, then it may all make sense, at the moment the straps don't offer anything to fit to.

:?

Apart from days out (events mainly) and getting the christmas tree, thats all I ever did with my roof. The clip to hold it half open never failed for me and its much quicker to "secure" the car just flicking the roof back on. Much less of a faff than fully open.

Yep, your hood is shagged.

The rubber "strings" should be firmly attached inside the front bar of the hood (the steel tangs often rust off). The only "poles" which shouldn't be firmly attached to the hood are the U-shaped front bar, which pivots from the shell - yes, if you allow it to go back, it'll clonk you on the back of the head.

With the roof closed, you have two clips which attach to the lugs above the B-pillars. The U-shaped front bar rests neatly on the top of the screen surround and is clipped down. The roof locates to the U-bar with two pins into the front of the bar, and a press-stud on the front handle (attached to the roof) clips onto the bar.

With the roof half-open, the clips stay on the lugs, the roof stays on the bar, and the handle press-studs to the rear of the bar across the bodyshell. The "loose" material is just looped back (and, yes, it flaps at speed)

With the roof full-open, the material is removed from the U-bar, which is clipped back to the screen surround. The material is then rolled (some people go inside-out, others outside-out), the rear passenger "grab handle" straps are unclipped from their forward end, looped around the material on the outside of the body, and clipped to the press-studs on the outside, above the rear window.

With pictures, from a '76 owner's manual.

BTW - this assumes a "normal" Club-style internal-fastening roof. Some early '80s Specials in the UK had an external-opening, without the U-bar, which clips to the outside of the shell. There's "tags" on the ends of the front bar which clip to longer lugs on the centre of the roof, so it can be secured rolled-up half-open. It's a better way of fastening them half-open, if slower, but worse way of fastening them closed.

EcAs are much cheaper I think. £160 last time I looked (I remember when thy were £60!)

If I had a 2cv to hand I'd take some pictures of it for you to show how it works, but I don't, so I can't, sorry! Hopefully somebody else with a camera and 5 spare minutes could though?
