Post Electronic ignition kits
One of the first things I do when I get a car with points is to convert it to electronic ignition.

Here in the US, the most popular system is the Petronix. I've installed these on American Fords and they have been reliable. Very easy to setup.

They make systems for other Citroen models (with distributors) but don't list one for the 2CV.

Usually a Petronix kit will sell for around US$70.

I installed a system on my Trabant which was an absolute pig to get setup. This car has two sets of points and two ignition coils.

It took me 5 attempts to get it working! The instructions being in German did not help

First the on board 6 to 12 volt converter burned up (which is not covered under warranty) before I could even get the car out of my garage! Ended up wiring it to my 6 to 12 volt converter for my radio and other circuits.

Come to find out the magnetic thing that slides over the points lobe has quite a bit of variation. So the engine was trying to fire at something like 10 degrees after TDC instead of TDC.

To make matters worse there are no timing marks on this engine. I guess because the crankshaft can work it's way out of phase because it's pressed together. So you have to find TDC yourself!

Hopefully the 2CV won't be as hard to setup. I watched a YouTube video and it seems simple enough.

Anyway, getting to the 2CV, so far I've seen the 123 system, someone mentioned by a guy named "Geo" that made them and there maybe others I am not aware of.

I don't want to sound cheap but $300 for the 123 system seems like of pricey. Well compared to a $70 Petronix system which would work just as good if they made one.

Any recommendations?

I built something like that for my Trabant. I've never used it though. I was looking for something that would entirely replace the points.

I've built about 10 of these now, 2 of them using Pertronix pickups.
What's the exchange rate for $ to £ at present?
Probably gone to pot after that Brexit b@ll@x, but the Pertronix kits I've found here are about £70...

The exchange rate is about 1 to .75. I guess in favor of the UK pound. However you want to look at it!

What was model was the kit you used intended for?

Before I got my electronic ignition working on my Trabant, I was going to build one using a Petronix system but the original ignition system uses a set of points and two coils for each cylinder. So I was going to have to use two pickups.

My original idea was to create a wasted spark system and fire both coils at the same time.

This would be OK on a 4 cycle engine but I had concerns about the other piston firing at BTDC being a 2 stroker. Even though the engine has rotary valves I wasn't sure what would happen. Maybe blow the exhaust system apart or the bottom end of the engine!

By the way, looking at some YouTube videos is appears the 2CV uses a wasted spark ignition system? Because it only has one set of points, a single coil but with the two leads coming off.

Also in another post you suggested I could use a coil from a Harley Davidson. And I know those engines use wasted spark ignition systems.

Yes - it is a wasted spark set up on a 2CV - the Gamatronix is very reliable and the points will last for ages once set correctly which saves the DIY need of building one - not that that is any reason not to - TBH - once you have got over the initial eek moment of tackling points on an A series they are dead easy to maintain....

This is the kit I built for my Trabant:

Never used it but still have it.

That's basically a Gamatronix - should work OK in that case - you have to take the capacitor out of the circuit as the electronics have them built in.....
