Post Re: Exhaust manifold studs
Russell,
I always use a (good quality) small chisel to cut the remains of the old nuts off the studs since trying to undo them has such a low rate of success.
If there's enough usable thread left, it's well worth a go.
Also, brass nuts for reassembly and check the torque at about 500 mile intervals, even if you're using the super duper exhaust gaskets from Roy... ;)

Yeah no problem, my 2cv has just developed a hole in its manifold so I'm going to have to swap it which (I'm pretty sure) will mean snapping most of the studs, so I'll have had plenty of practice.

I've just been thinking much the same, destroy the nuts to save the studs and then brass nuts for reassembly. I've got a couple of sets of heads that need new studs in, I might do them first, just in case...

Post Re: Exhaust manifold studs
It's blapping away merrily again and I've been distracted by other things. However winter is here and the car is very fumey, having the window open all winter will be miserable.

So i think I'm going to put on a used head. Haven't done that before, I guess it's easy though?

Any tips welcome. I suppose I should helicoil in some new studs before I fit it.

OK Helicoil is a bit expensive, but no more difficult than tapping oversize. You need to buy the kit, which is a special tap and the helical insert tool (a bit of tube with a slot in one end and handle on the other.) Once done, it is stronger than the original thread.

Yes I did all the current ones with helicoil, I cocked one up though unfortunately. Hence will just swap the head now I think.
