Post Engine milage. Am I lucky, naive or even stupid?
This is my 1988 D*lly, my daily hack.

Image

I bought it 9 years ago and in that time it's been through the wars, had some body work, got a new chassis and is absolutely solid.

I bought it with 62,000 miles on the clock (believed genuine) with full service history. I have all the dealership check ups, services and receipts for it (including a 1993 receipt from ECAS!) dating back to the early 1990s. Previous to me it seems to have had a lot of oil checks and new exhausts with Lumenition being fitted in 1991. And that's about it.

Image

As of today, it has 133,348 miles on the clock.

In my ownership, the engine and gearbox have never really been touched.

In terms of servicing, I've changed the engine oil and filter every 6000 miles (or less, usually before a major journey) and for the last year I've changed the gearbox oil at least every 10,000 miles or before a major trip (World Meetings, etc...). A least twice a year I change the fan belt, thoroughly clean the oil cooler, set the tappets and generally make sure everything is tickettyboo.

Repair wise, I unwound the gearbox so I put a new rear cover on and peened the nut. The first time I changed the gearbox oil a bit of a syncro ring fell out (that was over 12,000 miles ago) and I haven't worried about it since.

At the end of last summer a push rod became damaged, so I changed it.

And that's it.

As far as I know it has it's original barrels, pistons (8.5:1) and rings, manifold, carb, etc..., etc...

It goes well:

And it pulls well:

For a 1988 car at 133,000 miles is there anything I should do, or prepare to do in the immediate future?

I'm toying between this and the van for Poland, but I can't see any reason why this wouldn't do the 3000 miles I have planned. I was looking over a 2cv Facebook group and it was filled with neurotic people with money to burn who don't seem to be able to get to the end of their road without an engine exploding, pouring oil everywhere or bits falling off. I've read of at least two people spending £800 - £1000 rebuilding engines. I wouldn't even know where to put £1000 worth of bits on my engine.

Which leaves me wondering really and is the whole point of this thread. Given the milage, is there anything a 2cv engine needs doing when it's well into 6 figures? Or should I save up for... bits... that I may need to fit in the future?

It's a bit like the time I heard on the radio that it's natural for all men to worry about the size of their penis. I've never worried about the size of my penis. Ever. But now I'm worried that I should be worried about the size of my penis because I'm not worried. Is that worrying?

My engine has 204.000km on the clock never been opened. It just has had it's maintanance regularly. oil changes and points (since about 4 years an 123 ignition) And it runs fine. But it is now mostly my holiday/summer car. Trips to france etc. For the winter there is a prepared 1957 model after the Landrover had to go for tax reasons.

OT, but were you on the M4 today near Newbury at around 11am? I was going the other way in a lorry and I spotted a green and white D*lly with a green roof going west.

I susoect if the 1000 rebuilding annengine a large chunk will be labour

133k is nothing really,

I know its different totally but my book keepers car at work is on 200k (petrol) and refuses to die!!

Best bet is to carry the usual spares, and for any serious incidents / last resort breakdown recovery

I would not worry and just keep on enjoying it. Do not forget these cars where designed and build for the French would do not know how to change the oil. Another brilliant thing is there is no cam chain or belt which helps a lot.
