Not sure how much difference it would make, since I've always fitted those thin oil control rings with their gaps 180* apart, but you've got them almost lined up.
Note that unlike the scraper and compression rings, the relative positions of those oil control rings will not change when in use.
That would allow a much easier path for oil to migrate upwards into the combustion chamber.
Judging by the buildup of carbon on the piston crowns, there's been a lot of oil burnt...

Thanks for the reply Ken. The rings were rotated evenly when fitted however the bottom one was fitted as you see there as I recall rather than with the gaps in the thin rings 180 degrees apart. I suppose its a bit of a school boy isn't it?! :oops:

Do you think at this stage it would be advisable to take the rings and check the gaps or hone the cylinders or is it just a simple case of rotate the bottom ring and put it back together and give that a try?
