Braced Dip-Stick and Sump Mesh

 Braced Dip-Stick and Sump Mesh Just out of interest more than a problem anything specific.
I've split 6 blocks today, one was a black label AM2. In the sump there is a mesh gorse thing, is this some sort of baffle or simply just extra filtering?
The Dipstick is braced, to the oil filler and on to the block casting, what engine did they do this on? It looks original I.E it's really rusty and no sign of being Mig'd on.
