Just treated myself to a cylinder hone and some new rings, for the van's engine.

Can anyone give me some top tips for a) using the hone and b) fitting the rings?

I use a cordless drill with the hone, set it as slow as possible and plenty of light lube such as WD or diesel move the hone up and down the barrel to the point where the stones almost flip out. You want an all over matt grey finish with a 45* pattern When you stop the hone dont just pull it out or you will score the bores stop the drill then squeeze the legs in and withdraw.

If you spin the hone at a really fast setting it polishes the barrel which is counterproductive.

The fins that are cut out for the push rods fit nicely into the jaws of a big vice or workmate, its easiest if the barrel is held horizontal.

clean up well and give it a good wash with lots of hot water and detergent

Not much to say bout rings - just be carefull check which way is top and use a compressor. Don't get too hung up on setting the gaps as the rings rotate in use. Be carefull with the 3 part oil rings.

Puzzled already!

I bought a set of rings for an M28 and M28/1 engine. However, those rings are nothing like the fellers that I've removed from the unidentifiable engine that came out of the van.

These are the van's rings:


4mm thick. Internal diameter, as measured, 73mm (so must be 74mm when fitted).


2mm thick. Internal diameter, as measured, 72mm (74mm fitted).


1.5mm thick, approx. Internal diameter, as measured, 72mm (74mm fitted).

Can I just use the rings I've bought, or should I be buying different rings? ECAS website doesn't appear to have a like-for-like for the rings that I've removed.

thats early M28 or Argy piston sizes. Phone Roy he'll keep you right. If you got the rings for a later model M28 then no the rings wont fit as the top ring is too thick and the oil ring too slim.

Erm. When I said "unidentifiable", I meant that it had no engine tag or anything.
