The real issue here, is the cost of fuel from Calais to the WM. Presuming you get 200 miles on a tank, last week the price of fuel was about €1.40 a litre - you'd be looking at €350-€400 on fuel to get you there and back If I can get a return ferry to spain for similar money I think it would be worth the saving on money and time.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of fuel for the drive to and from a Spanish port though - Alcaniz certainly isn't near to any of those. I think I will go for the long drive and short boat.

 Re: Spain 2013
After posting that I had a look at ferries. Best I could do was Portsmouth - Bilbao and then Santander - Portsmouth for £500 Alcaniz is about 4 hours from the ports. Coops is looking at group discounts so I'm hoping he comes up with something. It's about 800 miles from Calais, I'd just rather be exploring Spain that caning through France.

I'm with you there Sam. My current favoured option is the long cruise both ways to either Bilbao or Santander (the Guggenheim is a big plus, and there's a branch of the other on my high street) and exploring a bit of Spain / pyrennes. Currently putting cash aside into a bank account specifically for this trip... expensive stuff this larking about in cars.

I'm buying Premium Bonds I figured that: a) Interest reates are shite, so I may as well be in with a chance of winning a decent prize. b) My record of 'untouchable' savings isn't good. This way I can't easily access the money until next year!

 Re: Spain 2013
Ferry booked.
Portsmouth to Bilbao... out on 24th back on the 6th.
There's a few discount codes floating about... cheers oboe. Saved 10% on ferry but not cabins. Still came to £889.20 but only 25 quid now balance in June.... ouch my car cost less then that.
No going back now... roll on the good times.

 Re: Spain 2013
You can always offer empty seats with 'contributions' to help pay the fuel and ferry crossing.
